The main objective of the project is to promote parents' digital literacy by raising awareness and educating them about the use of artificial intelligence. Digital literacy is a crucial key skill for lifelong learning, encompassing both technical and reflective skills. This skill is particularly important when dealing with artificial intelligence, as AI is seamlessly integrated into various technologies and has become an integral part of everyday life, whether through the use of tablets, car navigation systems, or virtual assistants such as Alexa or Siri.
Aside from the risks, AI also has the potential to develop our children's skills in previously unimagined ways. Therefore, it is important that parents help their children overcome the associated challenges. The initial focus of the project is the mutual learning process within the project team.
The detailed objectives of the project are:
- The transnational exchange of best practices to support parents and families in media education when using AI.
- Communication, education, and information about artificial intelligence. Ensuring that parents understand how AI works.
- Raising parental awareness of AI, particularly regarding chatbots such as Chat GPT.
The project's outcomes include:
A handbook to provide guidance and raise awareness for parents and families on the use of artificial intelligence. The handbook's topics include understanding AI, the impact of using virtual assistants on interactions with other people, the risks and opportunities of AI in social media, and ethical issues and opportunities associated with AI. The impact of these virtual assistants on children's development will also be examined, including child psychology aspects.
The handbook will be available digitally to parents in Europe in four languages (German, Slovenian, Greek, and English).
The project's activities will also contribute to improving the skills of educators and other staff in adult education. This target group will receive materials and background information on the appropriate use of artificial intelligence, which will contribute to promoting digital skills.
Europe has currently prepared a draft law on the use of AI. It aims to create a legal framework for the development, deployment, and use of AI systems in the EU.
In preparation for this proposal, we surveyed parents in all participating countries about their needs on this topic: Indeed, there is a consistent desire for information and support. We're not starting from scratch. This is about adult education. With AI, we're closing a gap in knowledge and skills.
